Fresno State Centennial wine bottling under way
Posted on March 29, 2011

To commemorate California State University, Fresno’s Centennial observance, the Jordan College of Agricultural Sciences and Technology viticulture and enology program is releasing a commemorative, limited release Fresno State Centennial wine in mid-April.

Centennial Cuvee is a Bordeaux-style red that blends Cabernet

Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec from the 2009 vintage.

“Each grape varietal was fermented and aged separately for 14 months,” explained John Gianni, the Fresno State winemaker.

Enology students tasted the aged wines last month and then developed the blend for this special bottling of 300 cases (a dozen 750 ml bottles per case). The Centennial Cuvee began running through the Fresno State Winery bottling line on Tuesday, March 22.

Gianni said the wine will retail for $19.95 per bottle with case discounts available.

The wine’s release will come before the Centennial Gala in the Save Mart Center, scheduled the evening of May 14, and the 100th Commencement at Fresno State on May 21. Those events are the final ones on the university’s Centennial Celebration calendar.

Celebrate the 10 Year Anniversary of the Northern California Winemasters Weekend at Tenaya Lodge at Yosemite – March 4-6, 2011

Two-night program at four-diamond resort features wine blending competitions, wine, food and music pairing workshops, stargazing, wine receptions and gala dinner

Tenaya Lodge at Yosemite, located just two miles south of the National Park, will once again be the venue for the annual Winemasters Weekend, partnering with California State University, Fresno’s acclaimed Department of Viticulture and Enology. Blending

competitions, music pairing and culinary delights will headline the weekend of wine workshops, which will take place March 4-6, 2011 at the four-diamond resort set amidst the Sierra National Forest.

Tenaya Lodge at Yosemite’s Executive Chef Frederick Clabaugh, CCC, will be joined by California State University, Fresno Winemaster, Kenneth Fugelsang to present the "Tastes of the World" food and wine pairing workshop on Saturday. Other workshops will include the "Ultimate Competition," a hands-on red wine blending and label designing workshop led by presenters Kris Curran and Bruno D’Alfonso and a wine and music pairing workshop led by Clark Smith. Experts and students from the university will be present throughout the weekend, assisting at the various workshops and answering participants’ questions.

The weekend kicks off Friday, March 4, with an evening reception, featuring the university’s own Nouveau wines, complemented with live entertainment. To finish off the evening, guests will enjoy stargazing with a professional astronomer and mulled wine fireside by Tenaya’s outdoor ice skating rink. California State University, Fresno Agricultural enterprises and representatives will be serving and cooking student produced farm fresh products during a light lunch on Saturday afternoon. Saturday evening will begin with another wine reception followed by a five-course gourmet Winemasters dinner prepared by Chef Clabaugh and his team, along with California State University, Fresno’s culinary students. Following the gala dinner will be the red wine blending workshop winner wine tasting featuring the wine created by the first place winner.

G.M. “Pooch” Pucilowski

Moderating for this year's Winemasters Weekend's events will be G.M. "Pooch" Pucilowski, CWE. Pucilowski is a dynamic and exciting speaker, whose enthusiasm for wine is balanced by his 30+ years of teaching and educating both consumers and members of the trade. A certified wine educator, prolific writer and highly sought-after speaker, Pucilowski brings his infectious enthusiasm and dedication to educating others about the myths and misconceptions people have about wine and the industry.

The two-night Winemasters Weekend Package starts at just $329 per night, per couple with a two night minimum. The package includes two nights’ accommodations (Friday and Saturday) at the four-diamond Tenaya Lodge at Yosemite, welcome wine-tasting reception and evening stargazing, three hands-on workshops, the Winemasters reception and a five-course gourmet gala dinner.
