Clovis Area Recreation
(CAR) offers a wide variety of programs and services at
four different sites in the city, ranging from a
skatepark at Letterman Park to its popular softball
leagues.
The
following are some of CAR’s upcoming activities.
Skatepark
Youth
and teens are the largest group of participants at the
Clovis Skatepark, located within Letterman Park on
Villa Avenue between
Barstow and Bullard avenues. The skatepark offers bowls,
ramps, street area and grinding rails of varying
difficulty levels to challenge skaters of all ages.
The skatepark is open
daily from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and is monitored by staff in
the afternoon. There is no charge to skate but
participants must wear protective gear and follow all
posted rules.
Batting range
Another
site operated by Clovis Recreation is the Clovis Batting
Range at Bicentennial Park on Sunnyside Avenue between
Herndon and Sierra avenues. The batting range reopened
for the spring season on Jan. 24 and operates Monday
through Friday from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., Saturdays from 11
a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
For $1.50 you can get 20
pitches of softballs or baseballs. The city
offers baseball machines ranging in speeds from 35 to 80
miles per hour, three fast-pitch softball and two
slow-pitch softball machines. A snack bar is also
available for snacks and drinks.
Softball leagues
Clovis
Area Recreation’s most popular activity is its softball
leagues. Seasons last eight to nine weeks, with the next
league starting March 27 (weather permitting). Teams
play at Rotary Park on the southwest corner of Villa and
Barstow avenues. Leagues run every day except Saturdays
and include both men’s and co-ed softball leagues.
A tournament is held at the
end of the session for the teams that qualify. The cost
is $385 per team. Some leagues fill up quickly so call
about space availability for your particular team.
During the summer league of 2010, the city had 90 teams
with 1,350 players for this very popular sport.
Indoor
sports (free play)
The
city also has a recreation building for indoor sports.
Located at 3495 Clovis Ave., between Ashlan and Dakota
avenues, the building offers adult sports during the
weekdays. Free open facility time is offered Monday
through Friday from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Adult leagues
currently offered include soccer, in-line hockey and
basketball; fees vary for these leagues.
Drop-in sports for soccer,
floorball, ping pong and volleyball are offered at
various times throughout the week. Drop-in sports cost
$2 per player. Call 324-2780 for the drop-in schedule
information or check out the website at
www.cityofclovis.com/recreation.
Special events
Each year, CAR offers
special events for the community. Two upcoming events
include the annual Easter Egg Hunt and the Aquafina
Pitch, Hit and Run.
The Easter Egg Hunt is free
and is open to all children from ages 0 to 12. The day
starts with games, coloring and concludes with an Easter
egg hunt. Bring a basket or bag to collect eggs. The
Easter Egg Hunt will be held this year on April 16 at
Dry Creek Park, located on the northeast corner of
Clovis and Alluvial avenues, starting at 10 a.m.

Easter Egg Hunt
April 16 will also bring
the Aquafina Pitch, Hit and Run competition. This
competition provides youngsters across the country an
opportunity to participate, free of charge, in an
exciting baseball/softball skills competition. The
national initiative gives boys and girls, ages 7 to 14,
the chance to showcase their pitching, hitting and
running abilities. Winners at the local level can move
into the sectional level, the team championships or even
the national finals.
The Aquafina Pitch, Hit and
Run competition is held at Rotary Park, on the southeast
corner of Villa and Barstow avenues, at 2 p.m. on April
16. Sign-ups start at 1:30 p.m. and you can register on
the day of the event. Parents must sign a release form.
Clovis Area Recreation has
opportunities for the entire family to get out and play.
