Workshop for Home Gardeners on Water
Conservation
The experts in irrigation and water-wise plants
at
the
California State University, Fresno Horticulture
Unit
will teach beginning and experienced home
gardeners the ins and outs of water conservation
in the San Joaquin Valley. They will be on hand
to help introduce efficient techniques used in
agricultural production into your garden to make
the best use of every drop of water. Fresno
State students and staff will provide advice for
nurturing home landscaping and gardens in the
Valley’s challenging climate while using less
water.
Drought-tolerant plants that are native to the
Valley will be given away during the plant exchange.
Part of the program will be a vermin composting
workshop to explain the process of using worms to
turn kitchen waste into compost for use in the
garden.
The $25 fee includes a ready-to-go worm box to take
home, said Calliope Correia, a Fresno State
Horticulture nursery technician.
Time: 8:00 a.m.
Location: California State University, Fresno
Horticulture Unit,
near the
northeast corner of Barstow and Chestnut Avenues.
For more
information, contact Correia at 559-278-2952.
Saturday, May 7th -- Worm
Composting Workshop
Home gardeners
will get hands-on instruction in worm composting in
a vermicompost workshop at California State
University, Fresno that will allow participants to
create their own natural-based fertilizer for an
organic garden.
Class materials
– red worms and a worm box – and additional readings
are included in the $25 fee.
Dr. Sajeemas
‘Mint’ Paskadee, a soil scientist/agronomist for the
California Agricultural Technology Institute at
Fresno State and Organic Farm adviser, and her
students will help participants put together a worm
box to take home.
Kitchen waste
is used to feed the worms, she said. “After four to
eight weeks, you will have a continuous supply of a
nutrient-rich compost to feed your plants and
improve soil health,” added Paskadee.
The workshop is
presented on the same day as the Water-Wise Plant
Exchange in the same area of campus, an effort to
help backyard gardeners conserve water by having
drought-tolerant plants available. Fresno State, the
city of Fresno and several community partners are
involved in the plant exchange.
The
worm-composting workshop is sponsored by the
student-operated Organic Farm Enterprise with a
USDA-Hispanic Serving Institutes Education Grant.
Time: from 10
a.m. to noon
Location: Fresno State’s Ornamental Horticulture
Unit, near the northeast corner of Barstow and
Chestnut Avenues.
For more information, contact
Pasakdee, at 559.278.2828 or
spasakdee@csufresno.edu.
