Like many towns and cities across the nation, the City of Clovis and the neighboring towns in the Central Valley proudly celebrated America's 234th Birthday with an abundance of decorated Americana themes in residential areas, business districts, public buildings, and city parks on the Fourth of July weekend.  Celebrations of various types were held as early as July 1st in many Memorial Parks, Churches, High School Stadiums, and other venues in the Valley.

The rich sound of uniquely American Bluegrass music was a highly appropriate type of music to remember and honor the Founding Fathers and to celebrate Fourth of July in Clovis. With a beautiful park setting at the Clovis Veteran's Memorial Square on Friday evening, July 2nd, fans of Bluegrass music gathered at a Bluegrass Concert in The Park to celebrate the Fourth with such a talented band -- The Dalton Mountain Gang. Yoseff Tucker, Ella Naiman, Tom Naiman, John Cogdill, and Paul Chesterton played many of their fans' favorite songs that brought warm smiles to many concert goers' faces that night. No wonder The Dalton Mountain Gang is so popular here!

 Story continued below.

Among the many other patriotic celebrations going on that weekend, on Sunday, July 4th, Clovis celebrated Independence Day with its traditional Freedom Fest at the Veteran Memorial Stadium of Buchanan High School with live music, all-American food, and fabulous fireworks that were crowned by many great patriotic songs. Clovis Freedom Fest has been known for its fantastic pyrotechnic. Many local residents arrived at the stadium early with their coolers, blankets, umbrellas, red, white and blue outfits, and American flags.

On this Fourth of July weekend, I had the privilege to ask some of the local folks what July 4th means to them. Here are their responses:

From Debbie Zulim, Manager of Hearts Delight in Clovis:

"Fourth of July means to celebrate our freedom and to remember and honor the people who have sacrificed to make it possible. I have special feelings for the patriotic military people who die for our freedom. I love patriotic songs,  just cannot

get enough of them.  On July 4th, my family and I will have BBQ with our neighbors. I'll play patriotic music for them. Then we watch the fireworks in Buchanan High School. We can see the fireworks from our front yard. I have many years of sweet memories about the Fourth of July. I always enjoy soaking up patriotic music and fireworks."

From Brenda Frantrich, Employee of Scoops Soups & More in Clovis:

"We are very grateful for the job our men and women in the armed forces service are doing for our country. We like to celebrate the Fourth in remembrance of them. Every Friday we wear red in honor of those who serve."

From  Niamh Herrick, Manager of Foxtail Gallery in Clovis:

"Fourth of July is an opportunity to get together and celebrate our freedom. I enjoy any opportunity to spend time with family. We should embrace our country's diversity, and our freedom to be diverse.

That is what Fourth of July is about.  My fondest memories of Fourth of July [are] being with my family. As a kid, I loved sparklers."

From Rosetta Anviel, CoOwner of Ivy & Lace in Clovis:

"Fourth of July means celebrations of freedom and choices. American people want to be free to pursue their dreams, free to speak their mind. They do not want dictatorship. I love Fourth of July. It reminds the
American people that our

Founding Fathers fought and died for our freedom. The people of this country need to be free at all time. This country needs to have good government to serve its people. My favorite Founding Father is Benjamin Franklin. My favorite president is Ronald Reagan.

On Fourth of July, I go to church and enjoy being with my family. We'll have BBQ. One of my special memories about Fourth of July is the July 4th that my husband came home from the Service. He was in the Navy and served in Korean War. I am 72 years-old and I have 13 grand children and 5 great grandchildren. My grandson served two tours in Iraq."

From Allen Ward, Clovis resident:

"I am here tonight at this Bluegrass concert with my wife Ramona and 11 year-old grand daughter, Cora. We come to Bluegrass concert every Friday night.
Fourth of July means that this country was built by our Founding Fathers to give rights  and freedom to all. Fourth of July reminds us

that the Constitution was created to abide forever. I strongly believe in the Constitution. It was written for the people to have a voice. All government levels, from local, state to federal, should obey the Constitution. On July 4th, our family gets together, and I fly American flag. I fly American flag every day, not just July 4th. This is still a wonderful country to live. We are proud to celebrate our Independence Day."

From Ed & Salwa Tucker, Caruther residents:

Salwa said: "We are happy to be here at this Bluegrass concert  as our son Yoseff Tucker is the lead guitar player and singer for the Dalton Mountain Gang. This Fourth of July means a lot to me because I just became a U.S. citizen three months ago. I'm from Israel and I

have been here for twenty-seven years. I have been happily married to Ed for almost twenty seven years. Fourth of July means a big family reunion. We eat together and spend time together"

Ed said: "Fourth of July means freedom and fireworks."

From Chris & Sue Jameson:

"Fourth of July means celebrating our country's Independence Day and freedom. Our favorite Founding Father is James Madison.

Every July 4th, we go camping in eastern Sierra for a whole week. We have been doing that for 5 years.

It will be a second year for our daughter Sierra (21 months old). We're going to have BBQ oysters. That's our family tradition."

From (Right to Left):

Amber Hall (17 yrs old): "Fourth of July means celebrating our nation's Independence Day. We need to remember and honor our military men and women and their families. My special memory of Fourth of July is my brother Tim Jones came home from Iraq on the July 4th three years ago.

My favorite Founding Father is Thomas Jefferson."

Leann Pereira (19 yrs old): "Fourth of July reminds us of our men who fought for our country. My special memory of July 4th is setting off fireworks with my family. My favorite Founding Father is John Hancock."

Jordan Murphy (14 yrs old): "Fourth of July means to celebrate our Independence Day, spend time with family, have BBQ. I enjoy watching fireworks on the Fourth. My favorite Founding Father is George Washington."

Adrienne Delean (17 yrs old): "Fourth of July means that we are proud to be Americans, and [it means] freedom. It's always special to me because my grandma, aunt, and cousin were born on July 4th. It gives us a family reunion. My favorite Founding Father is Benjamin  Franklin."

From Lettie Washington and her family:

"Fourth of July means freedom, security, and love as we get to spend time together. We feel blessed to live in this country.

My special memory of Fourth of July is the first July 4th to be with my grandson

Khalil when he was born ten years ago."

From Derynn Dyer and her son Jonathan (11 months old) :

"Fourth of July means Independence and freedom.

"My special memory of Fourth of July is the time I spent at my grandma's on July 4th, drank root beer float and watch fireworks.

My favorite Founding Father is George Washington."

From Sotero & Julie Gonzalez and 4- year-old daughter Jillian:

"Fourth of July is an important holiday. We feel so blessed to live in this country. We feel safe and secure here while many countries are in so much trouble and unsafe. We appreciate our military men and women who keep us

safe at home. Our nephew is in the Air Force and served two tours in Baghdad and Afghanistan.

"We do not have just one favorite Founding Father as they all sacrificed a lot and played such important roles in creating this country. So we love them all."

From Alicia Warren and 2-year-old daughter Bella:

"Fourth of July means freedom and time for family to come together. It also reminds us to remember and appreciate our military men and women who are away from their home to keep us safe. My brother Michael Warren is in Iraq."

From Chris & Melissa Nielsen and 21-month-old daughter Addysen:

"Fourth of July means freedom for our people, for every thing we own and do. It provides us an opportunity to be with our family. It also reminds us to remember all of our troops who are away from home to keep us free here and keep in our remembrance those who fought and died for our country. It is hard to choose

just one Founding Father. We appreciate them all as each of them played important role and gave a lot to build our country."

From Debbie Brown: "Fourth of July means freedom and independence. On July 4th, we have BBQ and spend time with family.
My favorite founding Father is George Washington."

Dennis Milbourn:
"I feel the same about Fourth of July as Debbie does. I enjoy dancing with Debbie on Fourth of July.

My favorite founding Father is Thomas Jefferson."

From Gary & Mary Lindeman:

"Fourth of July means freedom, liberty, and happiness.
On July 4th, we enjoy watching fireworks and spending time with family." Gary's favorite Founding Father is Benjamin Franklin. Mary's favorite Founding Father is Thomas Jefferson.

From Gramma Betty with grandchildren:

"Fourth of July means independence and freedom.

"On July 4th, our family get together, enjoy each other's company and watch fireworks. Clovis Freedom Fest has the best fireworks."

I strongly feel that love and appreciation for this land needs to be expressed not just on every July 4th, but every day. This page will stay open throughout the year to record the sentiments, thoughts, and love for America of all patriotic Americans.
