Things That Grow in Clovis
and Central California
Part 3, Summer 2011
By JoAnne Green
July 18, 2011

We are in the middle of summer, and the  Central Valley of California becomes stone fruit country. As the temperatures rise high, apricots, peaches, nectarines, plums, and Pluots ripen fast. There are many varieties of yellow and white flesh peaches and nectarines, plums, and Pluots. Some of the varieties were harvested as early as the last week of April, and some other varieties will be harvested through late October.

There are approximately 117,630 acres of land in California that were used to grow peaches in 2010, and each acre yielded about 9.79 tons of fruit, according to a USDA report in January 2011.

Here are some photos of locally grown stone fruit.

Here are a couple of photos of Granny Smith apples in a backyard in Clovis, taken on the first a weekend of June. This mature apple tree put out a lot of fruit this year. It is totally organic.

California apple commercial production in 2010 was 300 million pounds. California growers reported, low pest and disease pressure, and very good quality, according a USDA report.

There are no statistics on backyard production.

Roses, Thai basil, strawberries, Chinese mustard green, daylilies, and gladiolus, seen in this slideshow, are among the many delicious and beautiful things that grow in Clovis and around Central California beginning in springtime and continuing into early summer.
