One of
my favorite things on Christmas day is having a
glass or two of warm and fragrant Wassail.
Originally a British holiday drink, Wassail has
become popular in many countries, and there are many
variations of the recipes for Wassail. I learned how
to make Wassail from my beloved mother-in-law. She
used to make a non-alcoholic version of this
favorite holiday drink every Christmas when my
husband and his siblings were young. Wassail is my
husband's favorite holiday drink. The first few
years of our marriage, I used to serve eggnog on
Christmas eve and Christmas day because it was the
only Christmas drink I knew back then. It seemed
that every time my husband drank a glass of eggnog,
even though he enjoyed the eggnog, he would talk
about the delightful Wassail that Mom made during
his childhood. When Mom was in her 80s and no longer
making Wassail, as a foodie, I couldn't help wanting
to preserve that warm and beautiful tradition. So
one day I asked Mom for her recipe. She passed on
her recipe to me verbally, recalling the basic
ingredients as well as she could, although she was
uncertain of the measurement. I took that
information and started to create my own version. As
I continue to experiment, each year my Wassail has a
little different character, and my husband insists
that my Wassail is now even better than what Mom
used to make.
I love
to offer Wassail to my guests. I haven't met anyone
who does not like this warm, aromatic holiday drink.
Here is one of my versions of this old traditional
favorite holiday beverage.
Ingredients:
1/2 gallon of apple juice
or apple cider
12 oz. frozen lemonade
12 oz. frozen mango-orange
2 large fresh oranges, washed and halved
3 cinnamon sticks
1 whole star anise
A lot of love for
your family and friends
A dash of smile and hum softly
Instructions:
Put all
juices and spices in a large cooking pot.
Squeeze oranges into the mixture. Put the orange
rinds into the pot. Bring it to a gentle
boil over medium heat. Cover and simmer it for
about 2 hours. Cool, bottle, and keep it in
refrigerator. Just reheat it to serve.

Happy Holiday!
