Meats Evaluation
The National FFA Meats Evaluation contest examines
students’ skills and competencies in evaluating and
identifying meat carcasses and products.
Event components include a general knowledge exam, beef
carcass evaluation, retail meat identification, quality
and yield grading of beef carcasses, a team meat
merchandising activity, and solving a meat formulation
problem.
For earning the highest award in the national contest,
all the Clovis FFA Meats Evaluation Team members
received a $1,000 scholarship to further their
education. Team members are Cole Lane, Lacey McGrath,
Kelli Williamson and Markie Hudiburgh. The meats judging
team is coached by Agriculture Instructor Ken Dias, who
has coached 10 national champion teams.
Individually, Cole Lane was named the first high
individual in the nation. Other team members include
Lacey McGrath who earned second high
individual; Kelli Williamson, eighth high individual;
and Markie Hudiburgh, 14th high individual.
Nursery Landscape
The National FFA Nursery Landscape contest is a
competitive activity in which FFA members test their
knowledge and skills in nursery practices and
landscaping. Contestants must complete a general
knowledge exam testing horticultural and landscape
principles. Each participant must also complete a
practicum involving a landscape drawing, landscape
estimating, plant propagation, and an identification of
plants, disorders, and equipment.
In
addition to earning a team gold award, members of the
Nursery Landscape Team were successful individually.
Team member Nick Dalton received a gold award, and
members Katie Armenta, Astyn Lopez and Beatriz Rodriguez
all received silver awards. The Nursery Landscape Team
is coached by Agriculture Instructor Aireal Covey.
The
National FFA is the largest youth organization in the
United States with over half a million members as part
of 7,487 local FFA chapters nationwide. The FFA mission
is to make a positive difference in the lives of
students by developing their potential for premier
leadership, personal growth and career success through
agriculture education. “Clovis FFA was proud to
represent their community and state at the national
level,” said the team’s advisors.
