October was National
Breast Cancer Awareness Month (NBCAM), an effort that
has been going strong for 26 years. NBCAM is an entire
month dedicated to supporting survivors and those
currently battling breast cancer as well as honoring
those who have lost their lives to the disease. It is
also about providing information, promoting awareness
and giving instructions for self-examinations to help
women with early detection of breast cancer. In addition
to being the backbone of breast cancer awareness, NBCAM
is also making the world aware that even though much has
been accomplished, there is still a long road ahead in
finding a cure for breast cancer. Many Clovis Unified
schools, teams and departments honored Breast Cancer
Awareness Month in a variety of ways which included:
Clovis East
Clovis East High
School held its 2nd Annual Pigskin for Pink
football game on Friday, Oct. 29 during which special
pink spirit shirts and silicone wristbands were sold
with all proceeds donated to the Susan G. Komen for the
Cure foundation. The stadium was decorated in pink and
pink awareness ribbons were given to the first 250
people into the game.
Clovis West,
Buchanan
Clovis West and
Buchanan high schools teamed up for a “pinkout” at their
football game Friday, Oct. 22 to celebrate breast cancer
awareness by decorating the stadium in pink, giving out
pink thunderstixs and making pink shirts for students to
purchase with proceeds going to breast cancer awareness.
Football players wore pink ribbon stickers on their
helmets and the entire marching band wore pink shirts.
Pinedale
“Pink at Pinedale
Day” was the theme at Pinedale Elementary the week of
Oct. 25-29, which was inspired by a student who
requested that the school honor Breast Cancer Awareness
Month. The entire football team, including the coaches,
wore special pink wrist bands for its last game on Oct.
28, and in addition to the wristbands, the coaches wore
special breast cancer awareness shirts.
Alternative
Education
Gateway High School
staff, family and friends formed a team of 25 that
participated in the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure
Walk that took place at the Fresno State campus on Oct.
23 to honor one of their fellow employees who is
currently undergoing treatment for breast cancer; $450
was raised.
Clovis North
Clovis North High
School teamed up with Bullard High School on Sept. 30 at
the Clovis North High School main gym where both girls’
volleyball teams celebrated breast cancer awareness
through their Dig Pink effort. Fans in the stands were
covered in pink, three breast cancer survivors were
recognized mid-game in the center court, and nearly $400
in donations were collected for the Side-Out Foundation,
which in turn awards grants to medical
research organizations and entities dedicated to
providing compassionate support to breast cancer
patients and their families.
District Office
The CUSD District
Office Employee Association (CDOEA) participated in the
Lee National Denim Day effort as a way to support breast
cancer awareness. Employees donated $5 to the cause and
in return were given a pink ribbon pin and were able to
wear jeans to work on Friday, Oct. 8. In total, District
Office employees raised $750. The Lee Jeans Company
donates the money raised from this highly successful
single-day fundraiser to cancer research and to
organizations that provide support, education and hope
to people affected by cancer in communities nationwide.
