Clovis Unified School District Celebrates 50th Anniversary with Book, Party, Apparel

The 2010-11 school year marks the 50th year that CUSD has been in operation as a unified school district.

The district is celebrating this milestone in a variety of ways including the May 2 release of a book detailing CUSD’s history; a gala community celebration on June 11, a walk down memory lane to start the school year and

and the offering of commemorative CUSD 50th anniversary apparel.

CUSD history book

For decades, much of the documentation of the history of Clovis Unified School District has been buried in forgotten files; stored in the memories of current and former employees, students, Governing Board members and community members; or simply lost.

Never before has the history of the schools within the Clovis system been assembled into a comprehensive, concise and easy-to-navigate format. To commemorate the district’s 50th anniversary of unification, CUSD’s Communications Office commissioned 17 writers and renowned local artist Pat Hunter to create a book that would tie all of the district’s history together into one resource. The end result is a high-quality hard-cover book with thoroughly researched information found in archived newspaper articles, board minutes, local history books and many personal interviews. The book begins with the history of how Clovis Unified was born with each subsequent chapter chronicling in-depth the history of one CUSD school. Some schools histories’ extend as far back as the mid- and late-1800s.

“50 Unified Years – Building a Tradition of Excellence in Clovis Unified Before, During and After Unification” has an official release date of Monday, May 18, 2011, and will be available for purchase through various local booksellers, www.cusd.com and www.amazon.com.

Gala celebration

To further celebrate the 50th anniversary, Clovis Unified and the Foundation for Clovis Schools will host a gala community event Saturday evening, June 11, 2011, from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. featuring the sights, sounds and tastes of the last five decades. The celebration will take place at P-R Farms (at Shepherd and Willow avenues in northeast Clovis) which will be converted into a showcase of the past 50 years with memorabilia from CUSD’s first five decades displayed in a walk down memory lane, while the entire party will feature a parade of decades through live musical performances, videos, costumes, foods and drinks. A “Dress Your Decade” contest will take guests on a journey through the past 50 years of fashion.
