The Search for the Historical
Jesus
This class will
review the current results of the “historical-critical”
method employed by biblical scholars over the last two
hundred years to search out the historical Jesus. This
non-denominational class will study works of scholars
ranging from Albert Schweitzer to members of the Jesus
Seminar. An open-minded exploration will be made of the
synoptic gospels, the Q document, and the Gospel of
Thomas. A non-literal understanding of the bible is
essential for this undertaking. The search for the
historical Jesus will utilize the disciplines of world
literature studies, anthropology, archeology, and
biblical studies. From these sources, a picture of the
Jesus of history, as opposed to the commonly held and
taught Jesus of faith, will emerge. Teaching the class
will be Norman Lambert, who holds a Masters Degree in
Theology.
