Bears
grab second straight Central Section
title in 2011
It was a
banner spring for Buchanan baseball as the Bears took
care of business piling up wins on the field and
accolades off – culminating with state team of the year
honors and a national championship.
After
closing the 2011 campaign with a 9-3 victory over
Centennial on May 27 to secure a second straight Central
Section Division I championship, the Bears (30-2)
clinched the No. 1 spot in the ESPN RISE POWERADE Fab 50
national rankings. On June 6, the Bears, also No. 1 in
the state, were named this year’s Cal-Hi Sports State
Team of the Year.
“It’s
bigger than our program,” said Buchanan Coach Tom
Donald, whose Bears won Valley in 2005 and 2006 to go
with three runner-up finishes during his 13-year tenure,
of the national championship. “It’s a reflection of high
school baseball in the Valley and high school baseball
in the state of California. It also says a lot about the
Tri-River Athletic Conference. Our area is a hotbed for
high school baseball and this helps legitimize the
talent we have here in the Valley and in Clovis
Unified.”
The
Buchanan baseball team became the fifth Clovis Unified
School District program to end the season with a No. 1
national ranking (1994 Clovis High softball, 1997 and
1998 Clovis High baseball, and 2006 Clovis West boys’
soccer).
“It’s a
great honor,” said Seth Moranda, Buchanan senior
pitcher/shortstop. “Not too many teams get a chance to
say they were national champions. It was a great way to
end my high school career.”
Buchanan boys’ volleyball wins SoCal regional, No. 3
nationally
While
baseball reached the pinnacle, the Buchanan boys’
volleyball just missed a second national crown for the
school, closing a remarkable season with a regional
championship and a No. 3 spot in the ESPN RISE POWERADE
Fab 50 rankings.
Buchanan,
No. 1 in the state (MaxPreps), defeated Clovis West on
May 20 for the Central Section Division I title and then
fought back from a 2-0 deficit to top Otay Ranch (Chula
Vista) 24-26, 21-25, 25-17, 25-23, 15-12 on May 28 to
win the D-I Southern California Regional.
The Bears
(39-3) won their final 32 matches in setting a school
record for wins in a season. Buchanan became the first
Clovis Unified boys’ volleyball team to win a regional.
“It’s
amazing for Buchanan to [have two teams] nationally
recognized,” said John Jay, the team’s head coach for 11
years. “These kids are amazing. We’re a pretty unique
school in that we share a lot of our athletes. Coaches
and administration work well together to help these kids
succeed. It says a lot about this school and Clovis
Unified.”
The Bears
have won six Valley titles, two under Jay (2003 and
2011).
